Students must not only qualify themselves to study abroad through their application but must also ensure they are maintaining their eligibility for their intended study abroad program until the program start date. The deadline to demonstrate your eligibility for the location that you are applying to study abroad is at the point of your application submission. Applications will be reviewed and approved by Global Fairfield in accordance to the host institution requirements but ultimately it is the host institution who makes the final admission decision. Therefore, making any academic adjustments and/or not maintaining your eligibility can affect your final admittance. After your acceptance decision, Global Fairfield will continue to monitor your Academic, Financial and Dean of Student records to ensure that you remain in compliance with the host university admission requirements through your program start date. Fairfield students will be nominated to the semester study abroad program at UCU and must meet the following requirements:

• Have a minimum 2.8 GPA on a 4-point scale.
• Have a B1 or better Spanish language aptitude. *It is strongly recommended that students have completed 4 semesters, or the equivalent of university level Spanish. (Students may be asked to take a placement test as part of their application and acceptance process.)
• Have a major within the Dolan School of Business.

Fairfield University’s agreement with UCU allows for two Fairfield students to attend UCU per year, in either the Fall or Spring term.

While UCU does not have on-campus housing, UCU works with Mercosur Universitas to provide students with local shared apartments. The shared apartments have individual rooms, with a shared kitchen and bathroom.

United States citizens studying abroad in Uruguay for more than 90 days are required to obtain a visa prior to arrival in country. Visas must be obtained in person at the Consulate General of Uruguay in the U.S.

Students are responsible for obtaining all necessary documentation and for scheduling visa appointments. Our Gobal Fairfield office will hold a series of visa clinics to help review students’ materials, but ultimately the granting power of visas lies with the Uruguayan government.

All students will be charged Fairfield University tuition and the townhouse room charge. For questions regarding billing, please contact the Fairfield University Bursar’s Office.

Students studying abroad are often eligible for alternative scholarships and are encouraged to use these resources to reduce their financial burden. Some scholarships can be used to pay parts of tuition while others can be put toward flights or living expenses.
